Lupe

I liked this glowing Boston Globe review of The Cool. Also, here's EW's take (A-). I've now listened to the complete album about 4 or 5 times and I'm starting to pick out my favorite songs ("Hip Hop Saved My Life" and "Dumb It Down" currently top the list). I'm also now confident enough to say I like this album better than Lupe's outstanding debut Food and Liquor - though I still haven't found a single track quite as good as "Hurt Me Soul" on The Cool, which really isn't much of a criticism since "Hurt Me Soul" was always going to be pretty impossible to top. Bottom line, Lupe is incredible.

Yeah, I listened to it some yesterday, and Hip Hop Saved My Life is definitely incredible, although none of the other stuff has grabbed me too much.

Both the singles ("Dumb It Down" and "Superstar") are really good. I also like "The Weapon" and "Intruder Alert" a lot. And "Go Go Gadget Flow" and "Go Baby" remind me of Blackalicious of Jurassic 5 so that's kind of cool too.

Really though, besides "Hip Hop Saved My Life" and "Dumb It Down" (and "Superstar" too cause I've heard it like 5x more than anything else) nothing has stood out that much for either - but I think that's more because everything is so good not because nothing is great. It also took me a while to find "Hurt Me Soul" so who knows what my favorite song from this album will be a month from now.

Anyways, keep listening, and be ready to revise your top 5 album rankings for the year...

You should listen to Kala by M.I.A.; If I revise my top 5 it's going to be because of that ... Paper Planes is freaking great.
